The University of Technology Sydney continues to enjoy its popularity and strong status among students from across the globe, thanks to its ever encouraging position in international rankings. UTS ranked 28th on the Times Higher Education list of “100 most international universities in the world” and 193rd in the top 250 universities by the 2016-2017 QS World University Rankings. . That’s not all. It was also ranked as the 8th highest performing university in the world under 50 years old. UTS received five stars for excellence across all the observed categories by the QS Stars Rating 2014-2016.

Achieving these rankings on such prestigious platforms is no mean feat. Ranking systems in the education sector are constantly evolving and many factors are kept in mind when awarding the scores. For instance, the QS World University Rankings follow a strict list of parameters to rate and rank any world class university. These parameters include academic reputation, employer reputation, research work at the university, etc. These rankings are important as the majority of students and parents take such scores into account when deciding on a university.

This is a testament to UTS’s tremendous growth in popularity and international stature, both of which make it a preferred educational institution.

UTS:INSEARCH – a pathway into UTS

Thousands of students from 200 countries come to study at UTS every year. Moving to a new country for higher education studies can be overwhelming for any student. Getting around a new city, adjusting to new culture, food and a whole new education system can be difficult initially.

To cater to such teething troubles and help students become accustomed to a new learning environment, UTS provides access through itspathway institute, UTS:INSEARCH.  UTS:INSEARCH, with state-of-the-art facilities across the road from the main UTS campus, offers one-year diploma courses which allow students to fast-track into the second year of a UTS bachelor’s degree on successful completion of their study.  Over 90% of UTS:INSEARCH diploma graduates transition through to a UTS degree course in this way – now that’s a high success rate!

The UTS Insiders

To gain a better understanding of student life at UTS and UTS:INSEARCH, theirquality of education, faculty, and more, UTS has come up with a unique platform called the UTS Insiders program.  Through this program, 12 students from various streams have been selected to engage with aspiringstudents on social media to help them choose the right university and course.  You can follow each of these 12 students on Instagram and also visit their website, http://www.insearch.edu.au/insiders/.

To find out more about the university and this unique platform, I posted a couple of questions to four of these 12 students. Here are their responses!

What is the best thing about studying at UTS?

UTS imparts knowledge in a way which is more practice-oriented than purely theory based. This makes me more involved in my studies. Another great thing about studying at UTS is that all the assignments and presentations are completed on laptops and we don’t have to carry books, notebooks or other materials to classes.

What is your most celebrated moment at UTS?

UTS has interesting events running throughout the year and it’s fun to take part in them. It’s tough to pick just one moment that I cherish the most from my time at UTS, but I would have to say that my most celebrated moment was my decision to join UTS:INSEARCH. Also, I’d have to mention the time when I participated in the UTS:INSEARCH Student Council programme. This provided mea wide range of knowledge, experience and leadership skills, and my best experience from that was receiving a certificate of appreciation from the director.

Who should apply to UTS and how?

Any student with a dream to study abroad and get a degree from a prestigious university in the fields of IT, Accounting, Engineering and Communications should consider applying. I’d recommend spending some time on the UTS and UTS:INSEARCH websites and speaking to UTS Insiders online to form a view of what you would gain from studying here.

I like the academic system of UTS overall. If by chance you missed your lecture, you don’t need to worry about anything asall the material is available online. Not only this, you can also go for extra classes. Teachers are extremely cooperative.

What is your most celebrated moment at UTS?

My most celebrated moment was when I joined the UTS activity club for the first time. I had the honour of taking new students around on a campus tour. I interacted with them while showing them around. It felt so good to help them out. It was a great experience.

Being a student at UTS is the best thing in itself for me. I feel very privileged to bestudying at a world class institute such as UTS. UTS has given me so many memories in such a short span of time! But my most celebrated moment would be winning the FIFA 2016 Tournament hosted by the Activate Social Club/Activate UTS during Geek Week. It was a great experience staying until midnight and coming out on top despite a tough competition. The wait was definitely worth it!

What is the best thing about studying at UTS?

UTS is one of a kind. I enjoy being a part of a university which offers great infrastructure, good teaching staff and ample opportunities for both academic and extra-curricular achievements.

What is your most celebrated moment at UTS?

In the 1st semester of my 3rd year, as an assignment I was working on a brief for an interdisciplinary subject along with many other students from different streams at the University. The subject gave us an opportunity to work on the issue of mud crab theft faced by commercial and recreational fishermen in Australia. Post the final submission of the assignment, I was selected as one of two students who were to work at the Designing Out Crime research centre, a joint project between the NSW Department of Justice and UTS to bring design innovation to complex crime and social problems. I then conducted research on the subject, facilitated a workshop and prepared theofficial report for the stakeholders of the project.  All this paid off when I was designated as a “Research assistant” at the Centreon such an important environmental issue.
