3D printing, also more formally known as additive manufacturing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file. The creation of a 3D printed object is accomplished utilizing what is known as additive processes. In an additive process an object is successfully created by arranging successive layers of material in order to create the desired object. For a more concrete image, one can visualize each of these layers as thinly sliced horizontal cross-sections of the desired object. This is initially achieved through the virtual design of the object. Typically this is created in what is known as a CAD (Computer Aided Design) file using a 3D modeling program (for the creation of a totally new object) ór with the use of a 3D scanner which is used to copy an existing object). This scanner makes a 3D digital copy of an object and places it into a 3D modeling program.
The software separates the final model into hundreds of horizontal layers. The prepared file is then uploaded in the 3D printer. Afterwards, the printer creates the object layer by layer. The 3D printer analyzes every two dimensional image also known as a slice, and then carries on to create the object.Each layer is carefully blended together leaving no trace. This results in a perfectly three dimensional object. There are of course various methods to achieve this, as not all 3D printers utilize the same technology in order to create this model. Some of these methods differ based upon layers which are used to create the final object. Some methods use what is known as melting or softening material to produce the layers. Selective laser sintering (SLS) and fused deposition modeling (FDM) are, however, the most common technologies when it comes to this method of printing.
