In India, the trend has been in favour of compact sedans for the past couple of years or so. More and more people are opting for these cars as they offer the double benefit of compactness and spaciousness. Adding to the desirability is the excise duty cuts on cars under four meters in length, which was offered by the Indian government. Moreover, the compact sedans are not as bulky as the sedans. They are easier to handle, fuel-efficient and affordable too.

The major players in the compact sedan segment are Maruti, Honda and Hyundai. Of these, the Maruti Swift DZire and Honda Amaze are the top sellers and they enjoy great buyer backing. Here is a closer look at the two vis a vis each other. Interestingly, both these cars are first ever compact sedans from the makers. Let us try to find the differences between the two based on common factors like price, engine capacities, mileage and other features.

Cost – Priced between INR 4.85 lakh and INR 7.32 lakh, the Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire is cheaper than the Honda Amaze. The Honda Amaze is slightly costlier as its prices range between INR 4.99 lakh to 7.55 lakh.

Engine Specifications – Powering the Honda Amaze is a 1.5-liter i-dtec diesel engine, which has the ability of churning 100 PS of power and 200 Nm torque. On the other hand, the DZire is powered by a four-cylinder 1197 cc, 1.3-liter diesel engine, which can churn a maximum power of 86 bhp. The figures suggest that the Amaze is the powerful of the two. Both these cars come equipped with five-speed manual transmission gearbox. Both cars are available in both diesel and petrol variants too.

Mileage – The Honda Amaze is a clear winner in this as it offers a best in class mileage of 25 kmpl. The Maruti DZire has a fuel-efficiency of 22 kmpl, which is quite reasonable.

Features and Specifications – Amaze has the biggest boot space of 400 liters as compared to the 315 liters offered by Swift Dzire. The Honda car also possesses a more attractive and balanced look, as compared to the Maruti car. Nevertheless, Swift Dzire offers the best handling and smoother ride than the Amaze. Although the Amaze is feature-rich than the DZire, Maruti has an unbeatable after sales service network. This means it easy to get spares and services. Additionally, the overall cost of parts and service is less for a Maruti car as compared to a Honda car.

In short, both cars are better than the other in one or another feature. They are almost evenly matched and hence, the buying decision need to be taken based on buyer’s needs and tastes.
